How to Clean and Restore a Diatomite Bath Mat: A Complete Care Guide

By NEXSE Team

One of the best things about a diatomite stone mat is how little care it needs. There is no washing machine, no drying rack, and no fabric softener. Still, a few simple habits will keep your mat absorbing like new for years.

Everyday care

Most days you do not need to do anything at all. Just leave the mat where it is and let it air-dry between uses. If it ever feels less absorbent, stand it upright for an hour so both sides can breathe.

Weekly cleaning

  • Wipe the surface with a dry or lightly damp cloth to lift dust and residue.
  • For a deeper clean, use a soft brush with plain water. Avoid soap, oils, and lotions, which can clog the pores over time.
  • Let the mat dry completely before use.

Restoring absorbency with sanding

If your mat starts to feel slick or absorbs more slowly, the pores on the surface have simply become sealed by soap film or skin oils. This is easy to fix. Using the fine sanding pad included with your NEXSE mat, lightly sand the surface in small circles, wipe away the fine dust, and the fresh, fully porous stone underneath is revealed. Your mat will absorb like the day you bought it.

What to avoid

  • Do not soak the mat or put it in a dishwasher or washing machine.
  • Keep it away from heavy impacts, as natural stone can crack if dropped on a hard edge.
  • Skip oily bath products directly on the surface.

With this routine, a single mat stays fresh and hygienic far longer than any cloth alternative.
